UNESCO official
lauds UAE contribution to education
|
| Lilo Cappell,
the newly-appointed UNESCO attaché
in the UAE, has lauded the country for its
openness and generosity towards the global
cause of education. She was speaking after
UAE donors contributed significantly towards
a gala fundraising event in Germany in aid
of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organisation. "It
is not difficult to find examples of the generosity
of people in the UAE, as well their honesty,
open-mindedness and tolerance," she said.
"It was encouraging to see the enormous
response among donors from this part of
the world. When I told the gathering that
120 nationalities are living here in perfect
peace and harmony, several guests approached
me later eager to find out more about this
country."
UNESCO's ambition is to build peace by
helping member states nurture their capacities
in the fields of education, social and natural
science, culture and communication. The
UAE became a UNESCO member in 1973. Lilo
hopes one day to hold the UNESCO charity
gala in the UAE. She started her efforts
in Sharjah because it was designated as
the 1998 centre for culture in the Arab
world. "A prominent donor from the
UAE was the patron of the Rotary Club, Sheikh
Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of
Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman of Emirates
Group".

Third module of
UAE-Harvard Programme launched |
| The third module of the
UAE-Harvard Programme for Public Sector Innovation
was launched yesterday in the Maqam campus
at the UAE University in Al Ain. The programme
provides executive training for senior government
officials with the aim of enhancing their
leadership and management skills and is run
in collaboration between the Ministry of Finance
and Industry and Harvard University, represented
by the John F. Kennedy School of Government,
according to reports in the UAE's dailies.
Delivering the welcome address at the launch
of the programme, UAE Minister of State
for Finance and Industry, Dr Mohammed Khalfan
bin Kharbash, said: "The conduct of
this programme is a reflection of the UAE's
commitment to driving greater efficiency
in government operations and delivering
on our promise of high performance government".
Dr Kharbash also noted that the skills
and techniques shared at the two previous
modules of the programme had considerably
benefited the participants and allowed them
to display their enhanced abilities not
only at local or regional levels but also
at international levels. "Our performance
capabilities were put to the test during
the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World
Bank in September with a view to understanding
what leadership means and how it is implemented
in the Middle East. We took that opportunity
to explain to our partners and our peers,
what we here in the UAE are doing to promote
high performance government", Dr Kharbash
said.
Module III of the UAE-Harvard Programme
will focus on a variety of topics ranging
from pubic leadership to policy considerations,
innovation and negotiation. The programme
will run from the December 13 to17 and will
be followed by a graduation and alumni celebration.
On the 16th evening, UAE University will
witness the formal launching of the Harvard-UAE
club, chaired by Dr Kharbash and aims at
providing a forum for the exchange of views
between the UAE-Harvard graduates and Harvard's
knowledge community.
